Video Revision Rounds Explained
Revision rounds may sound like a limit. Instead, they work more like a shared checkpoint, built in so a video can be shaped properly before anyone commits to it publicly.
Every project involves people who were not in the room on shoot day. Brand teams, legal, a managing director with strong views on the opening ten seconds. Revisions exist to bring all of that together into one version everyone is happy to put their name to.
How many revision rounds should a video project include?
Two rounds is the typically the standard at CactusCan Media, included in the rate unless otherwise stated. Two works because the rounds do different jobs. One shapes the video, the other finishes it.
What counts as a revision?
A revision refines something already agreed. Trimming a section, swapping a take, adjusting pacing, fixing a lower third against brand guidelines, lifting the music under a quiet moment.
Larger changes sit in a different category. A new story angle, extra deliverables, additional cut lengths or a re-shoot change the shape of the job rather than the finish on it, so they get quoted separately.
Should you send all your feedback at once?
Send everything on version one! All of it, including the small details that feel too minor to mention.
Full feedback lets the whole picture be worked through together. A note about pacing and a note about the music often have the same solution, and seeing both at once produces a better version two than solving each in isolation.
Holding something back for later is a natural instinct, especially when the first cut is already close. The stronger approach is to put it all on the table and let the second round be about polish instead of repeat work.
Round one is the place for the big calls. Story order, key messaging, which takes carry the point, overall length, and how the video sits against brand and corporate guidelines.
Round two is for the finish. On-screen text, colour, audio levels, small timing adjustments.
When does a revision round officially close?
Typically, you should be asked to confirm whether all comments have been left. Then the edit can being and the next version can be created. Once the revisions have been confirmed, this closes that round of feedback as work on the next version is already underway. Any feedback received after this confirmation can be completed in a new round of revisions.
What happens if you need more than two rounds?
Some projects need a third, and that is completely fine. Long approval chains, multiple departments and regulated industries all come with extra eyes on the work.
Extra rounds can be added to the original price, which suits projects where several stakeholders will sign off. They can also be discussed as the need comes up and quoted at that point.
A few things worth confirming on any quote:
How many rounds are included in the rate
What counts as a revision and what sits outside it
How additional rounds are priced
Turnaround time per round
How can you get the most out of two rounds?
Early alignment does most of the work. Agreeing the script, the treatment and the tone before the shoot means the first cut arrives much closer to what you pictured.
Brand materials help enormously when they land early. Fonts, colour palettes, logo usage and any required disclaimers cost nothing to build into version one.
One person gathering feedback from the wider team keeps the direction clear and the edit receives a single confident set of notes.
Revision rounds are really about making sure a video says what you meant it to say. When the vision is clear and the brand requirements are known from the start, two rounds give plenty of room to refine something good into something you are proud of.
That is the aim on every project. A finished video that matches what you had in mind, meets every guideline, and lands on the date you planned around.
If you have something coming up and want the scope and revisions mapped out clearly from day one, we would love to talk it through.
